Carers ACT currently has capacity within our Counselling program.
Carer's who require short term Counselling support can contact the Carer
Advisory Line on 1800 242 636 or, with the Carer's consent, referrals
will be taken from agencies.
In order to be eligible, the Carer must be a resident of the ACT and
must be in an active caring role supporting a person with a disability,
a mental illness, a chronic or palliative illness, dementia or a frail
older person. It is important to note that simply being a parent or
worrying about someone does not fit our guidelines for a Carer - the
person must be actively providing regular support to the cared for
person.
Counselling is available on a short term basis for carers requiring
support around their caring role and the issues that arise from this
role. If a Carer is not already registered with Carers ACT, a short
intake will be done in order to ascertain eligibility and an appointment
will then be arranged. Appointments are only available during business
hours and are booked at our Holt or Woden office, usually within 2
weeks. If a Carer is unable to attend the office, a telephone
appointment can also be arranged and, if required, respite may also be
available to assist the Carer to attend the appointment.
