Chronic Conditions Seminar Series - Pain, Shame and New Ways Psychologists can Help

CHRONIC CONDITIONS SEMINAR SERIES
19 September 2013

PAIN, SHAME AND NEW WAYS PSYCHOLOGISTS CAN HELP

Presenter: Marion Swetenham,
Clinical Psychologist & Psychotherapist
7.00 - 8:30pm at SHOUT
Building 1, Pearce Community Centre, Collett Place, Pearce

Living with any chronic medical condition, including pain, can increase
feelings of defectiveness and inadequacy in all of us. This in turn can
amplify feelings of shame, which is often so painful that we can't speak to
it. We consult doctors and health professionals, who are trained in evidence
based therapies, so if these therapies don't work, we may feel more shame.
Marion's talk will look at the range of emotions that come under the rubric
of shame, as well as explore ways that patients can take back control so
that shame does not undermine their health care.

Marion has 15 years experience working in both public and private pain
management settings, and has been in private practice for the last 7 years.
She has a special interest in helping people who experience ongoing pain in
their lives. Marion also has recently completed a 3-year training program
in adult psychotherapy, where she developed her interest in addressing shame
states in people who live with chronic pain.
