PWD ACT launches new project to tackle access issues in Canberra

PWD ACT launches new project to tackle access issues in Canberra

Canberra is a city of brilliant possibilities yet some Canberran's have
trouble accessing the most basic goods, services and spaces in our
community.  Access is a right under the UN Convention on the Rights of
People with Disability and under legislation.

It's especially an issue for Canberra whose proportion of people aged 65
years and older is ageing faster than the rest of Australia - 3.6% of the
population compared to 2.9% of the population across Australia.

Access issues can take many forms but what they have in common is they
present barriers to people taking part in jobs, recreation and community
life.

PWDACT is commencing a new project which will consult with members of the
ACT disability community and develop recommendations and proposals for
continuing to improve disability access in the ACT.

Over coming months we will be consulting widely and then developing a report
for Government, business and community organisations.

A focus will be on ensuring that our planning arrangements for disability
access are fit for purpose given an ageing population.  We are keen to hear
about all forms of access through a cross disability lens including
communications, information technology and physical access.

The work aligns to a number of priorities around inclusion in Canberra and
the priority on access through #InvolveCBR

There will be a number of ways to feed back into this work and have your say

The manager for the project will be Craig Wallace.  Craig is respected
Canberra advocate who is a past President of People with Disabilities ACT
and is the current President of the peak national cross disability People
with Disability Australia.

Craig was also the founding Chair of the ACT Access and Planning Advisory
Committee and has worked on many campaigns around access including Housing
for Life.

He is also a member of the ACT Inclusion Council and was the winner of last
years ACT Chief Ministers Inclusion Awards for Excellence in Inclusion.

You can find out more as the project progresses via PWDACT's Facebook page
or contact Craig directly via craig@shout.org.au
