Click link below for full story from the Canberra Times.
"The ACT Government is considering a radical expansion of the territory’s domestic violence laws.
Carers, nursing home residents and killers of family pets would all be subject to the family violence provisions of the criminal law under the reforms.
The proposal would also criminalise emotional, psychological or economic abuse or intimidation of family members and spouses, or fellow residents in psychiatric homes or other residential facilities.
Attorney- General Simon Corbell says the Government is thinking about adopting the definition used in the NSW Crimes Act 2007 and that the proposal would extend the definition of domestic relationship into new categories.
These would include people living in the same household, sharing residential facilities like nursing homes, or anyone who had a past or present “dependent” relationship with the alleged victim.
There would also be an expansion of the laws to target paid or unpaid carers who attacked or abused vulnerable people in their care and people who killed or injured animals..........."
