Workshop - Building relationships Practical strategies for building a good life

An interactive workshop for people
with disabilities, their families, and
supporters.

You are encouraged to invite your chosen service provider to help you build on your planning.
This workshop will give practical strategies about the two elements that will make the most significant difference in peoples' lives - building relationships and finding valued roles.
Drawing on Janet Klees’ rich experience with the Deohaeko Support Network and other
families, this seminar will provide information about how to:
· create opportunities to build friendships and nurture freely given relationships,
· invite people to become involved in people’s lives,
· understand how relationships enrich and safeguard lives,
· effectively build Circles of Support,
· at the same time, plan for roles which allow each person to contribute to their community and follow their interests and passions,
· do all of this even when life is busy, funds are low, and there is a lot tojuggle!

Deohaeko is a group of families who came together 20 years ago to think about and plan good community lives for their sons and daughters with disabilities. They established a housing cooperative in which their sons and daughters live along side 200 other community members who also seek a good place to live. For 18 years, they have sustained a vibrant and diverse community spirit within the cooperative and the broader community.
Janet also works closely with other families, groups and projects. All of Janet’s work focuses on individually-designed arrangements and she is especially concerned that individuals and families are well-supported to think through practical, principled ways to ensure that each person lives a meaningful, involved and secure life within their communities through full-integrated work, leisure, civic roles and relationships. Janet is well recognized for her contribution to the lives of people with disabilities, families and as an author and trainer.
