Managing Serious Behavioural Incidents - Reactive Strategies

One of the issues we face in supporting persons with intellectual disability & challenging behaviour, is to develop non aversive strategies that bring challenging behavioural incidents under rapid control.

How do we stop people in behavioural crisis from hurting property, people or themselves?

This seminar will describe in a user friendly way, methods for supporting people in behavioural crisis.

This seminar is intended for direct support staff who work face to face with persons with intellectual disability , it may also be of interest to managers, behaviour support staff, parents and others.
This seminar will describe in a user friendly way, methods to rapidly bring a serious behavioural incident under control.
  • These methods will be illustrated by a range of case examples.
  • Methods include:
  • Antecedent control - controlling escalating stimulus, the presence of people, how to and not to make a request, good timing of activities, this place needs rearranging, and more.
  • Interrupting chains of behaviour -" the closer you get to me", "I like to follow instructions", "learn how to listen", "if only I could relax" "you make me laugh" and more.
  • Background Stimulus Change - "Christmas came early" and more.
  • Immediate Stimulus Change - "The Chevy Chase Method", "You must be crazy" and more.
  • Giving in to win - "Is it OK to reinforce challenging behavior?" Density of reinforcement, What to avoid, the rules.
  • Lessons of Geography - How to use the environment to minimise harm during an incident. "The Couch Potato"
  • Passive Physical intervention - What not to do, The risks, Ethical and legal considerations, "The gentle hand"
You will learn:
The orientating response - how the person actually responds to these strategies from a neurological point of view and why they work. Illustrated by our latest research.
The reactive strategy assessment process - how to assess the person to develop the most effective reactive strategy.
How to design reactive strategies.
How operant or respondent relaxation training can be used in a reactive strategy.
Peoples reactions to incident stress.
An assessment for you and your colleagues stress levels.
How to be prepared to manage an incident.
Lots of different strategies.

About Your Course Leader
Geoff Potter, B.A, M.Psych,Ph.D (matric) MACA;AAPA, AABA is a behavioural consultant and lecturer on supporting persons with challenging behaviour.
Geoff has presented his work at a number of international conferences including the World Congress on Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies.
He has worked in senior public and private disability positions and currently has his own private practice.

He has a very clear style in training and lecturing and delivers technical information in a non technical, easy to understand way.
He was also listed in Who's Who of Engineering and Science for his work in the disability field.
He carries an active caseload of clients with challenging behaviour from all over the country and is very passionate about working hands on with the client and support staff in implementing programmes to overcome the challenging behaviour.
He is currently Clinical Director of The Centre For Applied Behaviour Analysis a private behavioural corporation.
