Disabled fight to give evidence in court (south australia)

MARK COLVIN: Concerns are being raised about the length of time it's taking the South Australian parliament to bring in bills to let people with a disability give evidence in court.

As the law stands now many cases of alleged sexual abuse are dropped before going to trial.

That's because the intellectually disabled victims often have difficulty communicating and are not seen as reliable witnesses.

The South Australian government promised to close the loophole by amending the Evidence Act, but legislation put forward last year has now lapsed.
