Newman pledges $900 million funding for NDIS

Queensland Premier Campbell Newman has offered to chip in nearly $900 million over five years to help ensure the rollout of the National Disability Insurance Scheme in the state.

Mr Newman, who has previously expressed concern over Queensland's financial ability to contribute to the scheme in coming years, made the announcement in Brisbane on Wednesday.

Mr Newman said he had written to Prime Minister Julia Gillard offering to increase the state's spending on disability support by $868 million over the period 2014-15 to 2018-19.

The funding increase would begin with an extra $50 million in 2014-15, progressively increasing to $313 million extra in 2018-19.

Queensland currently spends $959 million a year on specialist disability services and has faced criticism because this is below the national average per capita.
