Offensive word spurs University of Findlay students into action

It all started with a $2 rubber bracelet.

In 2011, when Mariah Hohman was a sophomore at the University of Findlay, she heard about "Spread the Word to End the Word," a national campaign designed to spread awareness about the hurtful and dehumanizing effects of using the word "retarded." She later founded Stride (Students Teaching Respect for Individuals with Disabilities Every Day) which became a recognized campus organization in August. There are now 35 members who have donated more than 400 service hours to organizations like Special Kids Therapy and Special Olympics.
