Welcome to the third edition of the My Choice Matters newsletter. In our last edition we talked a little bit about the different areas of work of My Choice Matters. This time we want to talk about the "Getting Started" workshops rolling out across NSW in May and June. Getting Started workshops My Choice Matters will be coming to your region, running workshops. We also want to find out from you what knowledge and skills you need to make the new person centred system work for you. We will be running "Getting Started" workshops in: - Coffs Harbour: 2 May
- Dubbo: 8 May
- Liverpool: 10 May
- Goulburn: 16 May
- Hornsby: 6 June
- Newcastle: probably Mid June (stay tuned)
What will I get out of coming to a "Getting Started" workshop? George Ayoub, who has been managing his own package for a few years, says: "A lot of people have a fear of the unknown. Your only limitation is yourself. With my service I am the boss. I tell staff when to come and I organise my daily life around the things I want to do and who I want to help me do these things. So getting a service is not intrusive and I am getting on with my life." How do you do that? What kind of skills and knowledge do you need to be able to do that? How do you get started? What if you want to do things differently? That's what the Getting Started Workshops are all about. People with disability and family members will share how they got started, what they learned when things went right, and also what they learned when things went wrong. You will hear from people who have been managing their supports themselves about how they have taken more control and made more choices. On the day of the workshop you can take part with other people with disability and family members. You will learn about new thinking and new ideas that will help you get started. The topics for the workshops are: - Thinking outside the box
- Bringing others in
- Negotiation skills (how to 'give and take' when talking with others)
