Advocate for Change - Free Workshop on 12 May 2014

"Advocate for Change"
Health Care Consumers Association is offering a FREE workshop

Are you interested in building effective advocacy skills and developing
an Advocacy Action Plan on your own issue during the workshop?

We will work on two levels; skills for self-advocacy & collective
advocacy.
We will also look at how to develop case studies to use as an advocacy
tool.

By the end of the workshop participants will feel confident they can

* Understand how to develop and use case studies to illustrate an
issue
* Develop their own Advocacy Action Plan
* Increase skills and knowledge about effective advocacy
techniques that could work for an individual or a group.
* Present their issue using effective communication strategies
including how to describe and present an issue.
* Feel more confident in advocating for yourself or on behalf of
a group
* You will hear from people and organisations who have
successfully advocated will tell the story of their strategies.

12 May 2014 from 10am to 3pm
at MacKillop House Conference Centre

This workshop will include
1. Strategies for consolidating and presenting your issue.
2. Understanding the reality of advocacy and setting achievable goals
3. Collecting information to support your issue. Basic do it yourself
social research.
4. Finding support, identifying and creating alliances.
5. Identifying existing resources such as the Charter of Health Care
Rights, Human Rights framework & Close the Gap to support your advocacy.
6. What are the advantages and the differences between individual
advocacy, collective advocacy and system advocacy?
7. Skills and strategies for communicating your message effectively
a. Preparing written and verbal advocacy
b. Developing an effective style of presentation for your issue
c. Targeting your advocacy
8. Using the media to promote your issue. Can it work effectively for
your issue?
9. How can understanding Health Literacy be helpful for advocating for
your issue?
10. How could understanding the Social Determinates of Health help
inform your advocacy?

This is the third year we have offered this workshop.

We have introduced some new topics if you would like to participate
again or come and get some feedback from experienced advocates on your
strategies.
