Fewer peak bodies will be funded

The Federal Department of Social Services is halving the number of national disability peak associations that it funds. Tender results announced at Christmas will see funding discontinued for 8 of the 13 disability peak associations currently funded.
The Australian Federation of Disability Organisations is among those affected, despite developing a consortium proposal that incorporated a broad spectrum of disability consumer groups. Instead, DSS will fund People with Disability Australia as a multi-disability consumer peak.

NDS will continue to receive DSS funding to represent disability service providers.
The other associations that will no longer receive funding all represent particular disabilities, with the exception of the Disability Advocacy Network of Australia (DANA) which represents advocacy organisations. When the tender selection criteria were published in mid-2014, it was clear to many groups representing specific disabilities that they would struggle to win funding.
The following organisations have secured funding through the tender process:
  • Women with Disability Australia
  • Children with Disability Australia
  • First Peoples Disability Network
  • National Ethnic Disability Alliance
  • People with Disability Australia
  • National Disability Services
The organisations that will no longer receive peak association funding are:
  • The Australian Federation of Disability Organisations
  • National Council on Intellectual Disability
  • Blind Citizens Australia
  • Brain Injury Australia
  • Deaf Australia
  • Deafness Forum of Australia
  • Physical Disability Australia
  • Disability Advocacy Network Australia
