Self Advocacy Project for tenants of group homes (requesting assistance)

Good morning

Please see below and attached information from Advocacy for Inclusion regarding a self-advocacy project targeted to tenants of group homes.

Advocacy for Inclusion has received funding from Disability ACT and the ACT NDIS Taskforce to work with group house tenants to build self-advocacy skills and to assist with NDIS preplanning. We are now commencing this work and will continue until mid-2016.

Advocacy for Inclusion is seeking your assistance with approaching your consumers to participate in the project. We will work with some or all of a group house's tenants over a period of several months. We will only work with people with their consent; no one can be forced to learn self-advocacy.

Self-advocacy is designed for the most supported and isolated people with disability including people with cognitive disabilities and significant communication barriers. There is no one who cannot learn self-advocacy skills, nor is there anyone who cannot learn how to better express themselves. These are the people that we work with and have experience in working with. It is why we have been asked to undertake this project.

The project recognises that many people with disabilities, particularly with high support needs, are not quite group ready and would struggle to attend peer networks which already exist, including the Advocacy for Inclusion Self-advocacy Group which runs twice weekly. To address this need we are coming to the people in their own homes to ensure they are well supported as the NDIS draws closer.

For people with disabilities who are already active in the community and would like to participate they are welcome to join our existing Self-advocacy Group which currently meets on Wednesday afternoons in Woden, and Thursday afternoons in the City. This group is open to all people with disabilities in Canberra and is highly engaged and proactive in developing self-advocacy skills and discussing issues of importance to them.

If you have any questions about supporting your consumers to be involved in this project. Please contact Christina on 6257 4005 or christina@advocacyforinclusion.org.
