Event/Media Release: Contemporary Celebration of Women With Disabilities in the ACT

Media Release: Contemporary Celebration of Women With Disabilities in
the ACT WWDACT Strong Women, Circus Sisters

When: Tuesday, December 3, 2013
Where: City Walk (near the Merry-Go-Round)
Time: 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM

Women With Disabilities ACT (WWDACT) is organising a fun, exciting and
socially inclusive Circus Celebration Day in Canberra City on December
3rd, 2013 in recognition of International Day of People with
Disabilities.

WWDACT invites the media to be involved in this positive celebration of
International Day of People with Disabilities 2013 and encourages the
media to contact WWDACT for further information.

WWDACT has approached ACT education institutions and sought expressions
of interest from young women with disabilities along with non-disabled
women to join this fun event.

Those interested were invited to form a troupe of women to learn a set
of circus skills, over a six month skills development and rehearsal
period conducted by the Circus Warehouse.

This will culminate in a gala celebration on the 3rd December
International day for People with Disabilities!

This is an event which includes all people from the wider community to
join the come- and-try element of the day.

The primary focus is to create social connectedness for women with
disabilities, promote positive contributions, create links between
WWDACT and education institutions, and enhance social inclusion of women
with disabilities through participation in a mainstream activity.

WWDACT is a systemic advocacy and peer support group organization for
women with disabilities in the ACT. WWDACT supports and encourages women
with disabilities in the ACT to fully partake in every aspect of
community life and works collaboratively with the ACT Government to
create a more holistic and inclusive ACT society in line with the United
Nations conventions (the Convention on the Rights of Persons with
Disabilities and the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination
against Women)

WWDACT is excited about the planned Circus Celebration Day as it
involves creating social connectedness and capacity building for women
with disabilities which WWDACT feels is currently an area of unmet
demand.
