New Guidelines to fight disability hate crimes in the UK

In the United Kingdom there have been many hate crimes
against people with disabilities.
Hate crimes are crimes against people with disabilities
just because they have disabilities.
They have published some guides to explain what hate crimes are and
how to report them.
In the United Kingdom, new disability hate crime guides have been launched. Their purpose is to help raise awareness of disability-related harassment and hate crimes and explain how to report them. The guides have been drawn up as part of the joint Let’s Stop Disability Hate Crime project between the Office for Disability Issues and Disability Rights UK.
The project has produced three guides:
· A guide for people with disabilities on what is a disability hate crime, why it should be reported, and how to report it
· A guide for non-disabled people on what is a disability hate crime, why it should be reported and how to report it
· A guide that can be used by organisations for people with disabilities who would like to set up third party reporting site
The guidelines were drafted with the input of many people with disabilities and their organisations. Tthe Home Office, the Ministry of Justice and the Crown Prosecution Service also assisted in the drafting of these guidelines.
The launch of the guidelines was attended by Maria Miller, Minister for Disabled People who said it was crucial to provide a safe environment for people to report hate crime in cases where many would not have previously considered going to the police.
She also said it was important for people with disabilities, their organisation and non-disabled people to work together on this, that is why the guidelines for all three groups of people have been launched in a single package.
Finally she said “Living and working with disabled people plays a major role in promoting positive attitudes and this is why the participation of disabled people in public life is so important”.
