PEER EDUCATION TRAINING FOR NDIS (ACT)

PEER EDUCATION TRAINING FOR NDIS

The Australian Government Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA) is funding the delivery of Well Ways Building a Future and Well Ways MI Recovery peer education programs to ensure consumers and carers feel empowered to make decisions within the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

In ACT, the National Program, implemented by Mental Illness Fellowship Victoria, will train 2 consumer peers from PHaMs funded programs and 2 carer peers from Respite funded programs as accredited Well Ways peer facilitators.  Peer training will commence in February 2013. From March onwards, each peer facilitator will then be funded to deliver either:

  • The 12 week Well Ways MI Recovery peer education for consumers, to a group of 10 people with a mental illness; or
  • The 12 week Well Ways Building a Future peer education for carers, to a group of 10 carers.

Staff put forward for training need to have either a lived experience of mental illness or experience as a carer or family member; strong communication and problem solving skills; good connections with consumer or carer networks; some experience in group educational settings, and need to be available for the February training and March (onwards) Well Ways program delivery.

To take up the opportunity to support consumers and carers in making choices and taking control of their own support when the NDIS rolls out, contact Liz Bottomley on lbottomley@mifellowship.org by 18 January 2013 to enrol your PHaMs peer workers and Respite peer workers in the free facilitator training in your state.

For further information about both peer education programs, please refer to the Well Ways evaluation fact sheets for MI Recovery and Building a Future.

If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact Liz Bottomley on (03) 8486 4249.

Yours sincerely

Elizabeth Crowther
Chief Executive
Mental Illness Fellowship Victoria
