Ari Ne'eman Ari Ne'eman is the President and co-founder of the Autistic Self Advocacy Network, an American advocacy organization run by and for Autistic adults seeking to increase the representation of Autistic people across society. In 2009, President Obama nominated Ari to the National Council on Disability, a federal agency charged with advising Congress and the President on disability policy issues. He was confirmed by the Senate in July 2010 and currently chairs the Council's Entitlements Committee, overseeing Council activities regarding health care, income support and long term services and supports. He is the first openly Autistic presidential appointee in American history. She started the first specialist school, initiated a teacher training course, started the journal Autism Network, facilitated the start of services across South Asia, and brought about legislative changes that include autism. Merry writes, teaches, lobbies, trains, sensitizes, counsels, and advocates for the rights of persons with autism as equal citizens of the country. Merry is an Ashoka Fellow, and has received national and international recognition for her work. |
