SYDNEY autism conference July 31-Aug 1

Supporting young people with autism

How can we best support children and young people with autism in education settings?

"To ensure research makes it into the classrooms, parents and teachers must be deliberate and purposeful, be aware of the latest research, and advocate for the supports to continue to narrow the gap between research and practice.

- Lisa Ruble, international keynote speaker

NSW Governor General, Her Excellency Professor The Honourable Dame Marie Bashir, AD, CVO and Aspect Patron, John Doyle, AM, to launch the Conference

Our exciting program of presenters includes national and international speakers of exceptional calibre, representing educators, mental and allied health professionals, researchers and authors, as well as students, young people and adults living with autism. Being the first national autism in education conference, this is the first time that many of the program topics and research have been presented, revealing the latest research, findings and applications in the classroom.

As well as our international keynote speakers Barry Coughlan and Lisa Ruble, as featured in earlier newsletters, we also have keynote speaker Judy Brewer, Chair of the Cooperative Research Centre for Living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (Autism CRC).

Judy is a regular speaker and writer on issues relating to families caring for family members with special needs. As a parent of a young adult with autism, she has been actively involved at an executive level in a number of autism and carer advocacy organisations, and has sat on several Federal and State Government Committees. She will be talking about why research is important to families.

The impressive line up includes many more well-known names in the autism community. Visit the website for details and to read the abstracts of the 84 presentations and 20 poster presentations.

When:                    31 July-1 August 2014
Where:                   Australian Technology Park, Sydney

Professionals and family members and individuals will come away from the Conference with the latest evidence-informed practices for implementation into their own education settings for children and young people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

"We are particularly proud to include the voice of students, young people and adults with lived experience of autism about their own education – through presentations, video, posters and presence,"
