Red Cross invites you to participate in a free workshop; Building Resilience
to Disasters for the ACT and surrounds. In this workshop participants will
increase their knowledge of emergency preparedness and how to build
resilience within their client group. There are two workshops, one with a
specific focus on those work with older people and one for those who work
with people with a disability.
This Red Cross workshop, funded by the Australian Government Natural
Disaster Resilience Program, will bring together representatives from
Emergency Services agencies, experts in their field from the University of
Canberra and Macquarie University, and Lifeline to discuss their roles and
present their research to members of the community service sector. During
the workshop participants will draw upon their knowledge of their clients
and communities to develop strategies using an all hazards approach that can
be implemented with clients or within their organisations to increase
resilience, bolster business continuity and meet duty of care.
Who should attend? Red Cross recognises the importance of identifying and
working with people that have the capacity to influence behavioural change
in their community.
Community service workers who work directly with clients; managers of people
who work directly with clients and members of community groups or agencies
who are able to reach many people in the specified groups to assist and
encourage them to develop preparedness strategies.
Why should you attend? A community that is prepared will be more resilient.
As the frequency and severity of disasters increases, one of the best ways
to improve community resilience is to be prepared. Being prepared allows
people and communities to recover from disasters, both small such as power
outages and single home fires to large such as severe storms, heatwaves,
bushfires and other severe weather events. It is important that during the
time of a larger disaster organisations are able to provide business
continuity and meet duty of care.
