Our 'Links to Learning' Adult Literacy Program currently has tutors ready to take on students in all areas of Canberra, if you have any clients that are in need of assistance with their literacy skills please don't hesitate to contact me.
Here is a bit more info on our program;
'Links to Learning' is a volunteer tutoring program available to all adults living in the Canberra region who would like to develop their literacy skills.
Volunteer tutors are recruited through the Southside Community Services'
network, while the tutor training is provided by the Cooma campus of the Illawarra TAFE-NSW. 'Tutoring Adult Foundation Skills' course is specifically tailored for volunteer tutoring programs such as 'Links to Learning'. The course aims to develop participants' skills for tutoring adults in language, literacy and numeracy. It is delivered in a flexible format and there are no formal educational requirements for this course, just patience and good language, literacy skills.
After students have been assessed they are matched with a suitable tutor. Students and tutors together, arrange tutorial times that are reasonable for both persons. The preferred meeting venues are either one of the ACT public libraries, Southside Community Services in Narrabundah or under exceptional circumstances the student's home - only under exceptional circumstances. Tutoring is for an initial period of 6 months with a view to extending if needed.
As usual volunteers are required to complete a national police check (costs are covered by Southside Community Services).
The 'Links to Learning: adult literacy program' is funded by an ACT Government Adult Community Education grant.
If you have any questions please contact me either via phone or email, my office hours are Tuesdays 8.30am - 5pm.
