A subject close to my heart as we have just gone through the ASD assessment process for my gifted youngest child. apparently she was borderline on 3 criteria so it was decided she didn't meet them. I guess we'll just keep an eye on her in the future with an eye to the possibility it could be either AS or gifted quirks (mainly social disinterest).
Anyway, it is a very interesting topic to read up on, with many people passionate about both sides of the "argument". I personally believe it's likely many quirky gifted kids are probably on the spectrum, but no evidence of course ;)
