Self Harming Behaviours
Presented by Dr Sandi Plummer

About the Self Harming Behaviours course
"Self Harming behaviours" is a practical two day workshop. When clients experience difficulty in dealing with painful emotions, memories, or thoughts, they sometimes engage in behaviours which might be labeled "self harming". These behaviours, including suicide attempts, cutting, and addictions, may meet immediate needs to avoid or change a currently painful situation, and may be extremely dangerous for the client's long term physical and mental health. This workshop will look at a method for helping clients to learn new skills for dealing with painful emotional situations so that they may be in a better position to decrease self harming behaviours. Learning to stay within a tolerable level of arousal, lowering high levels of arousal, self- soothing, distraction, reflecting on self-harming episodes, distress tolerance, acceptance and dealing with urges to self-harm will be a few of the skills which workers will learn and will then be in a position to help clients learn.
