This workshop will focus on back care and mobility assistance for carers to use
around the home, teaching a no-lift procedure to assist people in and out of
beds, chairs, cars and the bathroom.
Facilitator: Barb Lawson has worked for many years in direct care and
care co-ordination with older people and people with disabilities, and now
teaches in aged care studies at CIT.

SUPPORTING SOMEONE WITH MENTAL ILLNESS - A COURSE FOR FAMILY CARERS
These 6 sessions are designed to provide information about mental health
conditions and available supports as well as an opportunity to better
understand and deal with the issues and challenges that arise when someone
you know is unwell. It is also a chance to meet other people in similar
situations and explore ways to strengthen your sense of wellbeing.
Topics covered:
* Understanding mental health and mental illness
* Communicating and connecting effectively
* Responding to difficult symptoms and behaviours, handling emergencies
* Services and supports
* Strength for the journey - managing your own stress and balancing
everyone's needs.
Facilitator: Jenny Thompson has a background in psychology and has worked
in the Canberra community for over 25 years. She has a special interest in
mental health, trauma and grief, and how families find resilience in the
face of adversity.
Dates: 6 sessions (Wednesdays) - 7, 14, 21, 28 March, 4, 11
April
Time: 6 - 8pm

Living a Healthy Life with long-term conditions - a course for Family Carers
LIVING A HEALTHY LIFE WITH LONG-TERM CONDITIONS - A COURSE FOR FAMILY
CARERS As a carer, do you have a chronic health condition? Or, are you
caring for someone who has any condition lasting six months or longer,
such as asthma, arthritis, cancer, obesity, diabetes or heart disease?
This evidence based course runs for 6 weeks and is being conducted for
CIT Skills for Carers by ACT Government Health Directorate in
partnership with Arthritis ACT and SHOUT Inc.
Topics covered include:
* Managing symptoms, including pain and fatigue
* Dealing with negative emotions
* Communicating with health providers
* Adopting a lifestyle that prevents complications
* Action planning and problem solving
Facilitator: Virginia Rasheed has been a Registered Nurse for 40 years
and most of her roles have been as a nurse educator dealing with a range
of chronic health conditions. She has a Masters in Nursing and her
current role is Clinical Nurse Consultant for Self-Management of Chronic
Conditions.
Dates: 6 sessions (Mondays) - 20, 27 February, 5, 19, 26 March, 2 April.
Note: no session on Canberra Day March 12
Time: 10.00am - 12.30pm
Cost: Free

BEAT IT Physical Activity Program now in the ACT
BEAT It physical activity and lifestyle program starting at CIT, Bruce in
March 2012!
BEAT It is an evidence based physical activity and lifestyle program
designed to assist those at risk of, or living with, diabetes and other
chronic conditions. Classes start slowly and build up as participant's
become more confident and as health and fitness improves. Classes are run
twice weekly, with each class including a combination of aerobic and
resistance training exercises. Combined with other regular physical
activity, BEAT It can help:
* Reduce the risk of developing diabetes and other chronic lifestyle
conditions
* Help with diabetes and other chronic lifestyle disease management
* Prevent development of diabetes complications and other chronic lifestyle
related conditions
* Improve heart health
* Improve blood glucose control
* Improve insulin sensitivity
* Improve blood pressure and cholesterol levels
* Achieve weight loss and weight management
* Prevent osteoporosis and improve bone mineral density
* Reduce the risk of falls and fall related injuries
* Improve mood, energy and quality of life.
This is a low cost ($5 per session or subsidised enrolments available for
health care card holders) physical activity and lifestyle program. A web

Train for Free through PPPDo you know someone who needs extra skills to get into the workforce?
CIT has a limited number of places for eligible jobseekers to train for FREE in key areas of demand.
If you're working less than 15 hours per week, and not currently studying, you may be eligible to train for free under the ACT Government's Productivity Places Program (PPP).
Specific courses have been selected for funding in industries that are currently in demand in the ACT. This means employment opportunities are plentiful for people with the right skills.
You could study any of the following courses free of charge, starting straight away for semester one, 2012.

Certificate IV in Disability

Certificate IV in Disability
Disability ACT in partnership with CIT Centre for Health, Community and Well Being, Southside Campus is offering direct support workers the opportunity to undertake Certificate IV in Disability.
As part of the Certificate IV Disability Program you will:
- Undertake and complete core and elective competencies
- Participate in a combination of classroom and work based learning
- Be assessed on and off the job
- Gain recognition for current competencies
- Graduate with the Certificate IV in Disability
Certificate IV in Disability
The next intake will commence Semester 1, 2012 and will take one year (two semesters) to complete. Attendance in the CIT classroom will be required one day per week – Tuesdays, during semester one & two.
Limited places available to Disability Support Officers - DSO2 or those with at least 3 months experience acting in that role as a DSO2 (DACT) and direct Support Workers from the community sector.
So....are you currently a:
- Direct support worker (DSO2 or experience acting as a DSO2) in a supervisory role
- Direct support worker who demonstrates leadership qualities
- Direct support worker advancing your career
- Direct support worker willing to commit to two semesters of study
