2012 National Disability Research and Development Grants National Disability Research and Development grants will be awarded to researchers for research that supports the National Disability Agreement, the National Disability Strategy and future reforms such as the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

A total of $750,000 (ex GST) is available in 2012 for the open competitive funding round. A maximum amount of $100,000 per year will be available for each project (unless a compelling case is made to exceed this limit). Projects can run over more than one year. A proportion (approximately 20%) of the total funding can be approved for seed funding to prepare for grants applications through this funding or through other processes such as NHMRC and/or ARC Linkage grants.

iPads with specialised software applications are amazingly useful as communication tools for children with special needs. They are compact and "cool" multipurpose pieces of equipment, that are allowing these children to communicate, express themselves, aid learning and much more.
Variety – the Children’s Charity have been granting iPads with specialised software for the last two years, among other equipment we grant for children with special needs. The biggest increase in requests for assistance is coming from families reaching out for help for this equipment to assist with their child’s development.

2012 Disability ACT Quality of Life Grants Now Open
The ACT Government through the Community Services Directorate – Disability ACT is offering eligible ACT residents a non-recurrent grant for up to $5000 per application. Total funding of $324,000 will be available this year for small, person-centered initiatives that may make a real difference to the quality of life of a person with disability under 65 years of age including those in residential aged care.

Quality of Life Grants

Quality of Life Grants

Applications for the annual Quality of Life Grants program will open on 10 April 2012. The program is open to ACT residents under 65 years who have a disability and their family and carers.

The grants provide small amounts of funding from $500 - $5000 for activities, training, specialist supports and products, equipment or modifications that make a positive difference in people’s lives.

In the last round, 154 applicants received funding to the total of $324 000.

Grants for women to study/train to re-enter the workforce

Grants of up to $1000 are still available for women on low incomes who
have been out of the workforce for an extended period due to caring
responsibilities (this may be children, other family members or any type
of caring role of 12 months or more). The grants can be used for
study/training and related costs to help women improve their
employability. The program is funded through the ACT Office for Women in
the ACT Community Services Directorate and is administered by the
Women's Information and Referral Centre.

ACT I-Day grants - Applications close 7 October

Nican with the support of Disability ACT is pleased to announce the opportunity for ACT community groups and organisations to apply for financial support, in the form of a once-only grant to assist in a program or event for the International Day of People with Disability in 2011.

The International Day of People with Disability (I-Day) is a United Nations sanctioned day that aims to promote awareness and understanding of disability issues and encourage support for the dignity, rights and
well-being of people with disability. I-Day also seeks to increase awareness of the benefits of inclusion of people with disability in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.

The Day brings together people with disability, community organisations, businesses, individuals and all levels of government. The Day unites people in the celebration and acknowledgement of the contributions, skills and achievements of people with disability. A key message for the Australian celebrations of the Day in 2011 is Breaking Down the Barriers.

Available Grant Funding
Each application may relate to an individual project or initiative funding of either up to $1,000 or up to $5,000 (plus GST). These funds are non-recurrent, which means that they will only be provided for the individual project or initiative in the 2011-2012 financial year.

The total amount of funding available for all applications in 2011-2012 is $20,000 (GST exclusive).

In 2011 there will be two categories of funding offered.

Community events, Category 1 Under $1000
I-Day initiatives, Category 2 Up to $5,000

Category 1 is intended for a range of small -medium sized disability themed community events, projects, initiatives and celebrations to occur on or around the 3 December 2011.

Category 2 will support projects with ongoing benefits and a matching contribution. Applicants applying for funding in Category 2 must demonstrate a matched contribution to the project or initiative and ongoing benefits from the projects beyond the International Day.

Only a limited number of Category 2 grants will be made. The matched contributions may be derived from other funding sources, provision of materials and/or equipment and human resources.

Projects or initiatives for both categories must be linked to the celebrations for the International Day of People with Disability and if an event is involved this should be held on or around 3 December 2011. All funded events must be registered on www.idpwd.com.au

Innovation Grants available

Disability ACT 2011-2012 Innovation Grants Now Open

Innovation Grants are available for people individually or representing an organisation for one–off strategic projects and initiatives that aim to create or improve opportunities for vulnerable people in the ACT, including people with disability. These projects would also have potential to assist a number of people including services or supports for carers and families; or by influencing systemic change. A maximum allocation of up to $50,000 is available per application to support these projects or initiatives. Total funding available this year is $200,000.

Disability ACT will accept applications starting 29 August 2011 until 23 September 2011. Late applications will not be considered.
